HULL, E. M., E. CHAPIN AND C. KASTANIOTIS. Effects of crowding and intermittent isolation on gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus). PHYSIOL. BEHAV. 13(6) 723-727, 1974. Gerbils were reared from weaning to adulthood in mixedsex paired, crowded or isolate-crowded conditions, the latter consisting of placing crowded animals into individual boxes for 2 hr per day. Paired males exhibited more ventral marking and nonaggressive contact in social interaction tests; paired females were far more successful reproductively than either crowded group. Isolate-crowded males were more aggressive in the home cage and in social interaction tests, and isolate-crowded females were somewhat less successful reproductively than crowded females. The only anatomical or biochemical differences among groups were heavier testes in paired males and heavier body weights in crowded males. Reproductive failure and decreases in behavioral measures were not mediated by adrenal steroids. The isolate-crowded conditions aggravated the effects of crowding, rather than decreasing them.

Cultivation of Giardia duodenalis in Mongolian gerbils.
The Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus) is susceptible to infection with Giardia duodenalis trophozoites. Each animal was orally infected with 0.5 ml Diamond's TYIS-33 culture medium containing 10(6) trophozoites. Cysts were then collected and concentrated by sucrose gradient centrifugation. G. duodenalis cysts were first observed in feces on day 5 post-infection. The characteristic of G. ...

In 4 experiments, the authors explored effects of interaction with both sexually active adult female and unfamiliar adult male Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) on young female gerbils' ages at first parturition. Presence of a natural mother retarded development of her daughters. However, presence of a natural mother had no greater effect on her daughters' development than did presence ...
متن کاملDetermination of Giardia lamblia cyst infective dose for the Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus).
The purpose of this study was to determine the 50% infective dose for Giardia lamblia (CDC:0284:1) cysts in Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus). The log10 50% infective dose results calculated by probit analysis and the Spearman-Karber method were 2.45 and 2.50, respectively.
